The mother of the child who had suffered severe injuries was rushed to Gwanda Hospital where she died while the taxi driver was transferred to Bulawayo.
The taxi driver suffered a deep cut on his right eye, but was in a stable condition when Southern Eye arrived at the hospitals’ casualty department. A male taxi passenger is admitted at Gwanda Hospital.
Eyewitnesses said the driver of the Granvia encroached into the lane of the oncoming taxi resulting in a head-on collision.
The taxi rolled several times before it landed on its roof hitting the mother and child in the process. The driver of the taxi reportedly fled from the scene.
Both vehicles are suspected to have been speeding as the accident happened a few meters from a pedestrian crossing.
The increase in the number of taxis and the importation of second-hand Japanese vehicles has resulted in traffic congestion in the town.
Most taxi drivers are forced to speed as they compete for customers.
