The event, commemorated on June 14, would be graced by Bulawayo Provincial Affairs minister Eunice Sandi-Moyo, representatives of the Health and Child Care and Primary and Secondary Education ministries as well as other stakeholders.

NBSZ Matabeleland public relations officer Sifundo Ngwenya said the celebrations were aimed at appreciating and celebrating the Matabeleland voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

“The belated celebrations are aimed at appreciating the people of Matabeleland who have voluntarily donated blood to save lives. As a region, we have been doing so well to ensure that our blood bank levels are stable and that calls for celebration,” Ngwenya said.

“The focus of this year’s World Blood Donor Day campaign is ‘Safe blood for saving mothers’ as women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. Some suffer from severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth.

“There is a need to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and blood products,” he said.

He added that the World Blood Donor Day would be celebrated together with the blood bank’s 25th anniversary.

Ngwenya said the commemorations would provide them with an opportunity to increase awareness on why timely access to safe blood and blood products is essential as a comprehensive approach to prevent maternal deaths.

Ngwenya said the blood bank’s stocks were stable although they could be easily compromised by many road accidents.

“Currently, our blood bank levels are stable and there is no need for panicking. However, they can be compromised anytime by the rampant road accidents prevailing,” he said.
