Simangaliso Nganga (29) of Nyama business centre appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Tomupeyi Peter Madibha facing a charge of defeating the course of justice after she allegedly alerted the wanted Remember Nganga to escape through the back door of her shop when the police were closing in on him.

It was the State’s case that on June 3, four constables Langton Zvenyika, Tawanda Makute, Simon Mwadiwa and Christin Mupambi from Zvishavane police went to Nyama business centre looking for Nganga, a former soldier wanted for assaulting police officers and robbery, among other charges. On arrival at around midday, Zvenyika went to Simangaliso’s shop and she alerted Remember that police had come to arrest him and advised him to use the back entrance to escape.

Zvenyika asked her why she had helped Remember to flee, but she denied informing him about the cops’ presence. He called other officers and Simangaliso was arrested.

Zvenyika was questioned in court why he did not effect an arrest on Remember when he heard Simangaliso informing him about their presence and he responded that the suspect was a very violent man who had previously used his military experience acquired from the presidential guard unit he served in, to assault police officers.

The trial continues today.
