Zibusiso Dube (30), who pitched a tent in a bushy area near Spitzkop medium-density suburb where he resides, was convicted on his own plea of guilty to charges of unlawful entry and theft.

Dube was in May this year sentenced to two years behind bars for unlawful entry and theft.

Six months were suspended on condition he is not convicted of a similar offence within five years.

He was, however, lucky to be released a few months later through a presidential amnesty.

Following his release, Dube reverted to crime. The court heard that on September 24 2014, Dube forcibly gained entry into Victory Kingdom Life Church in Gwanda and stole a laptop and a Samsung cellphone belonging to a congregant.

He then proceeded to Phakama business centre where he sold the laptop to one Wellington Moyo for $30.

Moyo paid $20 and promised to offset the balance the next day. The cellphone was sold to a different person.

Moyo then took the laptop to a computer shop to be apprised on how it operates, but a shop attendant who had been tipped off on the stolen laptop alerted police leading to Dube’s arrest.

The laptop valued at $300 was recovered.

In sentencing Dube, magistrate Olivia Mashava Mashaire said he had not shown signs of repentance by continuing to engage in crime, having been released from prison through amnesty.

He was sentenced to an effective two years in prison.
