This was heard by Bulawayo magistrate Charity Maphosa when Nozizwe Mthimkhulu (31) of Nketa 9 appeared charged with touting for passengers and assaulting a police officer or resisting arrest.

He was not asked to plead to the charge and was remanded out of custody on $100 bail to tomorrow for trial.

The court heard that on September 22, 2015 at around 4pm, the police officer, Brighton Ncube (28), based at Bulawayo Central Police Station, went to Egodini accompanied by other officers.

He arrested Mthimkhulu for touting.

But Mthimkhulu suddenly became violent and allegedly assaulted Ncube with open hands on the cheek.

That allegedly attracted scores of people and other touts, who targeted the police officers. Mthimkhulu allegedly took advantage of the commotion and ran away while still in handcuffs.

The handcuffs were recovered from him two days later when he was re-arrested.
